MESA, Ariz. – Legacy Cares Inc., the 501c3 organization that owns Legacy Park, announced today the organization will host an inclusive flag football league, called Mikey’s League, at the 320-acre sports and entertainment complex in Mesa that opened in January of 2022. The eight-week league runs from March 15 through May 3 and will feature coed teens and young adults with or without intellectual or physical disabilities playing alongside each other in a fun, team environment. Practices and games will take place every Tuesday from 6:30 – 8 p.m.
“Mikey’s League believes all kids should have the chance to be a part of a team, something that embodies what Legacy Cares is all about,” said Douglas Moss, President of Legacy Cares. “We want to create the opportunity for everyone regardless of their physical or sensory abilities to participate in sports. We are extremely excited to partner with Mikey’s League to help create experiences that are fun and allow these athletes to ‘Leave their Legacy’ at Legacy Park.”
The cost to participate is $150 for the entire 8-week season (ESA payments are accepted) and includes uniforms, insurance, facility use and equipment costs. Registration is now open and will be available through March 22 at https://mikeysleague.leagueapps.com/leagues.
“At Mikey’s League, our mission is to challenge the limits placed on athletes with disabilities and our programming emphasizes inclusion and a traditional sports experience,” said Scott Freeman, Founder and Executive Director of Mikey’s League. “By partnering with Legacy Cares, we can ensure that world-class facilities are a part of that experience now and in the future. Playing at Legacy Park is another way we prove to our athletes that their inclusion in sports is meaningful and their accomplishments are valued.”
Mikey’s League exists to bring the community together through the power of inclusive sports, a goal that is achieved by bringing together athletes with physical or intellectual disabilities to compete alongside their peer partners (individuals without disabilities). The league strives to create a genuine team sport experience for all participants with structured practices and intentional coaching so every athlete’s talent can shine.
